The Course 2013 “The making of a handcrafted guitar”

The registration for The Course 2013“The making of a handcrafted guitar” (with permanent supervision of Fernando Rubin) is now open. Limited places available.
The course will take place from August 12th untill sept.6th. The price includes all material necessary for the assembly of an artisan/handmade guitar with hardwood and  the theoretical and practical guidance necessary. It will be done in our workshop located in the town of Andratx in Mallorca (Balearic Islands). We will try to reveal the secrets of building a classical guitar in a pure and traditional way, in an place that smells and tastes of wood and has an atmosphere that thrives with tradition. A pleasant and unique workshop with work benches and tools of great quality to enable the assembly of the instrument.
The goal of the course is that the student acquires the basic knowledge required for building the instrument. It starts off with the selection of woods, the sharpening of tools and finishes with the varnishing and final adjusting of the guitar.
We will look deeply into the acoustic aspect and the manual side of the process.
Musician or not, the course is for those interested and curious to learn the step by step process of making a handmade guitar and discovering this great art.

The type and template to work from is to choose by the student, selecting from the plans of the great masters (Romanillos, Fleta, Santos Hernandez, Bouchet, etc. or FT79 and L00 models if it is an acoustic guitar you wish to make).
There will be active supervision and involvement by Fernando Rubin during the complete process. The finish of the guitar will be done with a special technic using shellac.
Few tasks are as rewarding as working with wood. To see how it transforms into something different, the evolution that takes place, something beautiful is being born from your hands. It is a true ART. The idea behind these courses is to preserve the art that luthiers have been carrying out for centuries, that would be otherwise lost.
The course includes theoretical  and practical tuition of the art that luthiers carry out when they make a guitar. The goal at the end of the course is not only that every student will have learnt all basic knowledge of this art, but also finishing it with his own quality instrument.
It starts with learning the different types of wood and tools used in guitar making to then move straight onto the building process.
We will work for four weeks, Monday to Friday from 9:30 to 13:30 in the mornings and from 15:00 to 17:00 in the afternoons and we will try to leave some free time to discover this beautiful island.
